Week 6 of Pregnancy

By the end of this week, your baby's size will have tripled, and the heart is now beating with a regular rhythm. Although this heartbeat is still too faint to be heard with a stethoscope, it may be visible in the coming weeks on an ultrasound as a small flickering dot in the middle of the baby's body. Interestingly, the baby's heart is already beating around 150 times per minute, almost twice the average adult heart rate. This week, the brain's hemispheres are forming, and brain waves can be recorded. Your baby, now about the size of a lentil and approximately 0.6 centimeters long, is rapidly growing and developing. The neural tube, which will become the brain and spinal cord, is quickly forming. Arms and legs are beginning to take shape, with small bumps appearing as limb buds. The heart, which has just begun to beat, is now beating at about 80 to 100 beats per minute. Major organs like the liver, kidneys, lungs, and digestive system are also starting to develop.

Tests and Monitoring in Week 6

Some tests and checkups that were not done last week might be carried out and reviewed this week. The first prenatal visit includes a complete physical examination, a review of medical history, and initial tests.

Blood tests are conducted to check levels of pregnancy hormones like hCG and progesterone, determine blood type and Rh compatibility, assess hemoglobin levels, and screen for infections such as hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis.

Additionally, a urine test is necessary to check for protein, sugar, and urinary infections.

If needed, an ultrasound may be used to confirm the pregnancy, assess the baby's health, and determine gestational age, and the baby’s heartbeat may be seen for the first time.
