Week 21 of Pregnancy

In the 21st week of pregnancy, your baby’s lungs enter a critical phase of development. The walls of the lungs become thinner to allow for better oxygen exchange. You may experience discomfort in the lower abdominal area known as round ligament pain. These ligaments connect the top of the uterus to the labia. Some women may feel an unpleasant pulling sensation when standing, which improves with sitting or lying down. This pain usually subsides by the 25th week. During this period, avoid smoking and stay away from environments where people smoke. Alcohol consumption is prohibited, and medications should only be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Avoid spicy and stimulating foods like strong coffee and tea. Consume garlic in moderation, as it can cause low blood pressure in the last months. Follow your doctor’s advice on salt intake, and avoid chips, pickles, and salty foods. Increase the frequency of meals while reducing their portion size, and have your main meal 2 to 3 hours before sleep. Also, avoid consuming spicy and fried foods.

Tests and Screenings in the 21st Week

During this period, in addition to continuing routine care, some tests may be conducted in the 21st week if they were not done in the 20th week. Additionally, some specific screenings may be performed. These tests and screenings include the following:

Anomaly ultrasound (anomaly scan), one of the most important screenings at this time, is performed to check for structural abnormalities in the fetus. It examines the brain, heart, kidneys, spine, face, hands, and feet of the fetus, as well as the position of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetal growth.

Urine test is conducted to check for urinary infections and other kidney issues. This test evaluates the levels of protein, glucose, and the presence of bacteria or infections.

Maternal blood pressure screening is performed to identify signs of preeclampsia. This screening checks for high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and other symptoms of preeclampsia, such as severe headaches or changes in vision.

Weight assessment for dietary and nutritional needs and the overall health status of the mother.

In this week, the mother should monitor the number and type of fetal movements and report any changes or decrease in movements to the doctor. Also, counseling and education are provided to the mother regarding body changes, proper nutrition, permitted and prohibited activities, and care tips to address maternal mental and emotional health, stress, and concerns.

These care measures and tests help doctors ensure the health of both mother and fetus and to identify and manage any issues promptly. If you have further questions or need more detailed information, please feel free to ask.
