Week 23 of Pregnancy

Over the next two weeks, billions of brain cells will develop in your baby’s brain, which will control all of their movements and essential life functions, such as breathing. Also, during this time, major changes are happening in your baby's lungs. Surfactant, a substance that helps the air sacs inflate and the lungs fully expand, is being produced. Currently, your baby is still breathing amniotic fluid, but they will be ready for air when they are born. The nails are almost complete, and the eyelashes and eyebrows are growing. You should pay attention to your daily needs in terms of micronutrients and macronutrients and ensure that you receive them fully. Additionally, this week, you should ensure you are getting your daily vitamins A and D, the mineral zinc, and fiber completely. Now is a good time to start shopping for zero to six-month baby clothes. Just keep in mind that a baby’s weight will double by the time they are six months old. For example, if the baby weighs 3 kg at birth, they will weigh 6 kg at six months. So for now, just buy a few small outfits.

Tests and Screenings in the 23rd Week

This week, in addition to continuing routine care, some tests and screenings may be performed if they were not done in previous weeks to monitor the health of both mother and baby. These tests and screenings include the following:

Anomaly ultrasound (anomaly scan), one of the most important screenings, which may still be prescribed if it has not been done by this week. This screening checks for structural abnormalities in the fetus. It examines the brain, heart, kidneys, spine, face, hands, and feet of the fetus, as well as the position of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetal growth.

A urine test is conducted to check for urinary infections and other kidney issues. This test evaluates the levels of protein, glucose, and the presence of bacteria or infections.

Maternal blood pressure screening is performed to identify signs of preeclampsia. This screening checks for high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and other symptoms of preeclampsia, such as severe headaches or changes in vision.

Weight assessment for dietary and nutritional needs and the overall health status of the mother.

The glucose screening test, usually conducted between weeks 24 and 28, may be ordered by some doctors in the 23rd week to assess the risk of gestational diabetes by measuring blood glucose levels after consuming a sugary drink.

This week, the mother should also monitor the number and type of fetal movements and report any changes or decreases in movements to the doctor. Counseling and education are also provided to the mother regarding body changes, proper nutrition, permitted and prohibited activities, and care tips to address maternal mental and emotional health, stress, and concerns.

These tests and care measures help doctors ensure the health of both mother and fetus and to identify and manage any issues promptly. If you have further questions or need more detailed information, please feel free to ask.
